Sport news: Sports Leadership at Cotham School
In assembly the PE department presented a slide show to Year 10s about becoming a sports leader at the school. They talked to us about our responsibilities and the qualities we would need if we became a sports leader. About 15 students applied for the role so they could go through an interview. Most people were successful and the next day we talked about some of the difficulties of teaching younger students and how to focus a group of people.
On 10 February some local primary school Year 5 pupils from St Johns and Henleaze came to the sports hall and we were given a group of students to teach a game. I learnt that the best way of teaching is through showing and giving examples. After teaching our group the "over and under" game my group was very focused and competitive and really seemed to engage with the game. A couple of the pupils tried to take over though, which made it harder for the quieter ones. Hopefully we will develop the skills needed to stop this as part of our training,
After the races we were all given a different game to present to another group. We had the game "Farmer Farmer" where you are only allowed to cross the field if you are wearing specific clothing - if not the farmer has to try and catch you. We found it very difficult teaching another group a game clearly so they could understand it. You need make sure everyone knows the game before moving on.
Overall, we are extremely pleased to be sports leaders. It is very valuable training experience to work with younger students. It was fun as well! Hopefully the Year 5s have some games that they can teach their other classmates!
