Article: Sporting Funnies
What’s funny regarding sport? If you can’t think of anything, one, you’ve been seriously deprived and two, you’re about to learn the 4-1-1, or should I say 4-4-2 on the side-splitting half of sport.
First things first, the easy stuff. Bloopers. If this doesn’t ring any bells then I should just throw in the towel now. Bloopers, or outtakes, originally referred to mistakes made in media, such as in films, but thanks to basketball can now be used for sporting slip ups- quite literally sometimes. If you type “sports” into Youtube the first drop down will inevitably be “bloopers” and that’s because they’re simply hilarious. If I had a pound for every hour I’d supposedly wasted watching these compilations I’d have at least 42 pounds. If you still need persuading that sport can be funny then you’ve got to get ironic. Have a closer look at some sports. The rules, the concept, the ridiculous hair and I defy you not to laugh. The idea of kicking an animal bladder into a net or being the best at throwing a cake pan around. The insane amount of passion that sport creates. On a large scale uniting nations, on a micro scale mascot punch-ups. The alarming amount of money spent on the whole thing and each athlete. You can make a serious living from something called “jamskating” whatever that is. Finally, one of the most humorous parts of watching sport is actually listening to the crowd. Not only in the surprisingly witty chants and the use of pragmatic awareness to update the classics “the referee’s a BANKER!” but just overhearing the regular overweight punter claiming he could do better.
