Music technology

AS level - 30% examination, 70% coursework

A2 level - 40% examination, 60% coursework

Why should I follow this course?

If you are a musician whose primary interest lies in popular music then this course will provide you with a range of music technology and musical skills, developing your composition technique through the use of technology and your wider awareness of popular music. During the course you will learn how to record and produce bands, compose and arrange in popular music styles using Cubase and study popular music and jazz from 1910 to the present day.

What teaching and learning methods will be used?

This course is largely practical with pupils spending time learning how to use the recording studio and Cubase to complete coursework. In addition to this, pupils will spend one hour per week in the classroom developing listening skills and answering questions in preparation for the listening and analysing exam. You need to be willing to get involved in extra-curricular activities.

What can I do when I have my qualification?

A qualification in music technology can lead to studying music on one of the many music technology degree courses at university or can start you on your way in a career in the music industry as a sound engineer or composer. Music technology A level can also enable you to pursue a career in the wider creative media industries, one of the fastest growing sectors in the country.

What minimum qualification will I  need?

NBP16C level 3 entry requirement, including grade C in music, grade 4 standard in any instrument and the ability to read staff notation.
