AS level - 80% examination, 20% coursework

A2 level - 80% examination, 20% coursework

Why should I follow this course?

How did the universe begin? What happens in the quantum world? What does E=mc2 tell us about matter and energy? Physics is about the big ideas. If you are intrigued by these questions then you should study this subject. Physics is also the science behind much of our modern world. What are the forces on aircraft? How does a wind farm work? How does a digital camera take a photograph? If you are fascinated by how technology works then you'll find this course very rewarding.

What will I learn?

AS level

  • Mechanics
  • Electrons, waves and photons
  • Practical skills in physics

A2 level

  • Newtonian world
  • Fields, particles and frontiers of physics
  • Practical skills in physics

What teaching and learning methods will be used?

A diverse range of teaching approaches will be used to develop the theoretical and  practical aspects of the course. Every lesson will be challenging. In any lesson you may be giving a presentation, participating in a discussion, solving problems, using Excel for mathematical modelling or carrying out an experiment. Studying continues outside lessons and you will become a confident independent learner.

What can I do when I have my qualification?

A level physics is an impressive qualification for entry into almost any career or university course e.g. engineering, medical courses, veterinary medicine, teaching, scientific research and computing. A level physics students also use their highly developed skills in quantitative reasoning, analysis and synthesis to succeed in business, finance and law. Physics is also desirable if you want to follow a career in music technology, acoustics, theatre lighting and sound or computer game design.

What minimum qualification will I need?
