Why should I follow this course?
If you are interested in studying an exciting, lively and relevant subject, which encourages you to question some of the ways that society is organised, then sociology is certainly for you. If you want to know why people behave in the way they do, and how our behaviour and the opportunities which arise in life can be shaped by social influences, class, age, gender and ethnicity, then this is the course for you. What teaching and learning methods will be used?
We use a variety of different teaching methods. There will be lots of class discussion, lectures, presentations, videos, essay writing, group work, note-taking, use of ICT and debate. You will undertake your own research using methods which include surveys, observation, interviews and statistics. You will be expected to take an active interest in the social world and keep abreast of current affairs.
What can I do when I have my qualification?
Sociology is accepted for admission to a wide range of university degree courses. It is a well respected qualification which shows that you have good analytical skills and the ability to understand a range of ideas and arguments. Sociology can lead you into any number of professions including the media, politics, journalism, teaching, social work, counselling, personnel management and the legal professions.
