Author Event: Bali Rai
North Bristol Post 16 Centre, Redland Green School
Post 16 Assembly, Wednesday, 24 March 2010
We have been invited to host the above author event and he will be talking to Year 12 as part of the visiting speakers programme during assembly. Bali Rai's first novel '(Un)arranged Marriage', published in 2001, is now cult young adult reading. Leicester born and bred, Bali Rai is now well established as a distinctive voice in young adult fiction. His books have been translated into 10 languages and have won many awards. He has been invited all over the world to talk about his writing. He will be talking about his latest book 'City of Ghosts' which was published in 2009.
'City of Ghosts' is set in Amritsar in 1919, a city on the edge of revolution, and whilst Bali Rai describes it as 'a historical novel with magical realism and ghosts' it is as gritty, challenging and thought provoking as many of his other works.
Whilst we have the majority of his books in the school library and his works are widely available through the public library we are providing an opportunity for students to buy a copy of one of his books from the list attached and have it signed on the day. Books will be available with a £1.00 discount on each. No one should feel under any obligation to buy book(s) but those who wish to do so need to bring money on the day. Cheques need to be made payable to 'Redland Green School'.
In order to help us work out how many copies of the titles we potentially need, could you please fill in and return the reply form below to the Library Staff . Clearly indicate which book(s) you would like. Please return the form by 8 March. Copies of the books on the list are on display at the library desk in The Vista to look at and extracts are available to take home.
Information about novels by Bali Rai can be found on the following websites:
- www.librarieswest.org.uk then click on 'Author Search' and type 'Rai, Bali' into query box.
Finally, it is anticipated that photographs and recordings made on the day may be used for publicity. Please contact the school in writing if you do not wish to be filmed and/or photographed.
