NBP16C Win Bristol Schools U18 Cup Final!

Bristol Schools U18's Final, Frys Football Club, Keynsham

The North Bristol Post 16 Football team have had a wonderful season with group game victories against Castle School and Patchway School. This led to a semi-final against 3 time winners Ashton Park. On a sun drenched afternoon at Coombe Dingle, a determined Redland/Cotham side came out on top following a late winner from Dan. This set up a mouth watering tie against holders of the trophy for the last ten years, St Brendans College. With a chauffeur driven mini-bus escorting the players to the big game, the atmosphere was relaxed but  confident.

The game started well, with North Bristol applying some early pressure; however a lapse of concentration allowed for St Brendans to snatch an early lead. The boys kept at it and were rewarded just before half-time with a very tidy finish from Steve. Half-time allowed for inspirational words from the management team and a change of style, with the wind now in our favour. However, sadly just like the first half, St Brendans capitalised on loss of possession and scored from a long distance strike that swerved and dipped in the air and beat our normally reliable John in goal!! With time running out, attack was our only option and with 15 minutes remaining Tam was fouled in the penalty area. This allowed for Dan to step up and level the scores. With the wind in our favour and superior fitness telling, chances were starting to fall to us. It wasn't until the final 5 minutes that Tam was again put through in the area, only to have his legs taken from under him. Again, up stepped Dan to take North Bristol into the lead. The final 5 minutes were tense, but we held on to claim a marvellous victory against a side who have won the trophy over 30 times in the past 50 years.

Throughout the year, an excellent defensive unit has been in place; John in goal, Sam, Joe, Dan, Ryan and Mihad. The midfield has been stong, aggressive and provided lots of goals through Dan, Jack , Remi, Edgar and Ellis. And finally the forwards led the line with pace, strength and excellent finishing; Dan, Isaac, Steve and Tam.

Every member of the squad has contributed to the success this season with excellent commitment and effort. As most of the team are in year 12, it bodes well for next year.
