Oxford and Cambridge Student Conference 2010

With AS exams on the way and the university application process fast approaching for year 12's, a group of students from the North Bristol Post 16 Centre were given the great opportunity to attend a national information day about Oxford and Cambridge universities. This day was held in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and aimed to enlighten students about application to and courses at Oxbridge.

As students frequently have misconceptions about Oxbridge and are doubtful about their capability to study there the first talk 'Oxford and Cambridge' explained given by current undergraduates and tutors informed the audience enthusiastically about university life and the unique teaching style. There were a lot of student representatives present, who contributed some lively anecdotes about the study and social aspects of university life.

After the introduction students could choose which sessions to attend during the day to get information about specific courses. On top of this, in depth talks were given by Oxbridge staff (including admissions staff) about interviews and student finance. These were extremely informative and students were given ample time to ask questions and talk to current undergraduates.

Aside from the explanation of university life at Oxbridge, students were helped to understand the differences between the two universities.

Despite the long and busy scheduled day (to the point of having to eat lunch on the go between talks), whether the students felt more encouraged to apply or not, it definitely gave a clearer outlook on Oxford and Cambridge universities.
