Politics Week at Charnwood House
Cotham Learning Community Students' Union organised a 'Politics Week' at Charnwood House from 14 March to 18 March. We saw a variety of interesting speakers and received a great response from everyone who attended. Firstly, on the Monday, we had a Buddhist monk from Tibet come in to give a talk on his life and voice his opinion on a variety of issues, ranging from Chinese rule in the Tibet region to homosexuality. The accessibility of his character and the total joy he seemed to take from sharing his knowledge with the audience, led to great interaction between the packed room and the monk. The week continued with members of the Union taking an assembly at the centre, letting everyone know who we are, what we do and how we are going to make changes. However, the main and concluding event of the week was the 'Question Time' styled debate on the Friday. The panel comprised of two MPs, a local councillor, a Student Union Sabbatical Officer from Bristol University and Dr Blasco, a teacher from Redland, and our own politics and economics 'expert'. We had questions on voting reform, nuclear power and tuition fees, which obviously created a large scope for heated debate and emotional reactions from members of both the panel and the audience. Feedback on the event indicated that it was an enjoyable and useful experience for all concerned, raising £122 for Comic Relief.
