October 2021
- Following some student voice work during the last academic year, we now gather additional information from students who speak English as an Additional Language as part of our pre-enrolment process. This includes an opportunity to specify the level of confidence with English for parents and carers. This will allow us to target support (including interpreting and translation) where it is needed, whilst also respecting that many of our students live in households where multiple languages are spoken with great confidence and expertise.
- An additional change to our pre-enrolment means that we now request student pronouns as part of this process, meaning that all students have their pronouns as a highly visible ‘quick note’ on our central systems enabling staff to accurately address our young people.
- Survey work is beginning this term to offer our students the opportunity (if they wish for it) to add the accurate pronunciation of their name to the same space on our systems.
- Following disruptions as a result of Covid and the teacher assessed grading process, we have re-launched the curriculum work with our Post 16 Forum (subject leaders at both learning communities). Working with One Bristol Curriculum, we are undertaking the next phase of review so that... every student at NBP16 feels recognised, valued, invested and immersed in their curriculum. TO achieve these, we are working to three priorities:
1) Improving diversity and representation across the curriculum
2) Re-examining how certain subjects are taught through a western or colonial lens, and re-framing this
3) Teaching explicitly about racism and anti-racism, past and present, within the curriculum (ie in lessons and connected to learning)
- To assist with the Covid 19 recovery, Post 16 providers have been allocated a small sum for Tuition Funding. At NBP16, we are allocating some of this to appoint a new student mentor who will focus much of their work supporting Somali family liaison work, offering cultural and language support and further develop home-school relationships for our Somali heritage students.
- During Black History Month we have a range of events lined up including student-led talks and debates. We surveyed students at the start of the month to get a strong sense of desired focus and priorities.
- This year we have seen further expansion of our Student Leadership Teams, with additional roles created to lead on Equity and Diversity, as well as our work to further challenge sexual harassment and gender-based violence. Roles are deomcratically elected and we have been really pleased to see diverse representation of the student population moving into these posts.
- Senior Leaders at the Centre are continuing into the second year of their programme of race, identity and school leadership training.
- Our BAME strategy group/diversity working party move into their second year of work at each school, with a large number of staff committed to leading on the development of racial literacy and the empowerment and achievement of BAME students.
- We are in the early stages of a partnership with Bristol University Law Society to set up student workshops, raising awareness around rights in reference to ethnicity.
